Group gives Fashola 7 days to visit all bad Federal roads in South East

Asks FG to declare state of emergency on them
A human rights group named as Campaign for Democracy, CD has called on the federal government to declare a state of emergency on all the federal roads in the South East geo-political zone.
CD therefore gave the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashiola (SAN) seven days to visit all the federal roads in the South East zone to see for himself how deplorable they are, to justify the state of emergency to be declared on them.
In a press statement issued to newsmen yesterday and jointly signed by its President, Ifeanyi Odili, its executive officer, Abdullahi Jabi and its National Publicity Secretary, Dede Uzor .A. Uzor, CD mentioned such roads as Enugu/Awka/Onitsha expressway, Ihiala/Orlu/Umuahia highway, Nnewi/Uga/Akokwa/Ideato connecting Orlu via Owerri highway, Nnewi/Amichi/Ekwulumili/Unubi/Uga/Akokwa/Arondizuogu/Umulolo/Okigwe highway, Enugu/Okigwe/Umuahia/Aba/Port Harcourt highway, Enugu/Abakaliki/Afikpo highway, among others.

CD lamented that an average of seven deaths are being recorded within the South East roads per week as a result of road accidents, thereby bringing a total death toll on the roads to 28 per month.
According to the statement, “It is in South East that the worst deplorable state of roads are found which are as comparable as that of Somalia and South Sudan where the people witnessed over 30-year old war, adding, the state of emergency is imperative in order for the federal government to take a holistic approach to avert the continued loss of lives and properties in the zone”.
“It is also in the South East zone that there is worst erosion menace in the country and it is expected that the federal government would at the same time address the erosion issue”, CD further stated.
They therefore warned that should the federal government fail to heed to this clarion call, the All Progressives Congress, APC-led federal government should not expect miracles from the electorate during the forthcoming 2017 Anambra state gubernatorial election that will usher in another governor in the state in 2018.
