2 killed in petrol tanker explosion in Ondo



TWO persons were reportedly burnt beyond recognition and one other injured as a diesel-laden tanker exploded on Benin-Ore Expressway, yesterday, in Ondo State.
Reports had it that the accident occurred 28 kilometers after Ore town.

Eyewitness accounts told Vanguard that the diesel-laden truck was coming from Ore end of the Expressway and heading towards Benin in Edo State and on getting to Ofosu reportedly lost control and somersaulted before it exploded.
It was learnt that immediately the truck exploded two of its three occupants were reportedly burnt beyond recognition.
The only survivor, who also suffered severe burns, was immediately rushed to the Ore General Hospital for medical attention.
Eye-witness accounts attributed the crash to over-speeding and reckless driving. Vanguard gathered that the tanker was carrying 33,000 litres of diesel expected to be discharged at a filling station in the commercial town of Ore.
Motorists plying the Benin-Ore expressway watched helplessly as the fire raged until it consumed the entire truck leaving its wreckage.
According to Vanguard it was learnt that policemen in Ore, who were informed by sympathizers, raced to the scene and assisted in removing the wreckage that had caused traffic gridlock for hours.
Confirming the incident, the state Police image maker, Femi Joseph, said two of the occupants in the truck including the driver were burnt beyond recognition in the explosion while the only survivor was rushed to the hospital.
