Govt building collapses at Itoku market, four injured
NO fewer than four persons have sustained serious injury while scores believed to have been trapped on Friday in the collapsed building at Itoku market in Abeokuta South local government area of Ogun state.
Confusion gripped traders and residents of Abeokuta following the collapse of the newly constructed Itoku market in the state, leaving many workers trapped.
According to Vanguard , four persons have been rescued with various degree of injuries, while rescue effort was still ongoing.
Details of the cause of the collapse of the four story building was still sketchy as at the time of this report but security operatives and men of the national and state emergency service were still busy with the rescue effort.
The surging crowd prompted security operatives to fire tear gas to disperse the crowd as tension seems to have gone high.
At the moment, records from the site engineers indicate that there were 16 workers on site at the time of the unfortunate incident and they have all been accounted for.
A statement by the Honourable Commissioner for Information & Strategy, Adedayo Adeneye, stated that eight of them were rescued un-hurt, five who sustained different degrees of injuries were receiving treatment at the state hospital Ijaiye, Abeokuta, adding that one was critically injured, while two have been discharged.
Efforts to clear the rubbles at the collapsed building site were ongoing as at the time of filing in this report.
He said: “Government has requested the combined rescue team to be more diligent with their operations as some non-site workers may be trapped in the rubble.
